You’ll learn how to
✓Find the sweet spot on any amp instead of turning knobs and hoping
✓Stack gain the right way for HUGE, dynamic tone without losing clarity or feel
✓Dial in lush delays and reverbs without muddying up your tone
✓Learn the science and nuance of mic placement
✓Apply it all to Helix, Fractal or any modeler you use
Ten video modules covering amps, mics, compression, overdrive, distortion, fuzz, delay/reverb/modulation, and the digital rig. Real demonstrations on a wide range of pro and budget gear, so you can immediately apply what you're hearing to your own rig.
Who it’s for+
Players who know when their tone is wrong but aren't sure what to change. If you're constantly tweaking knobs, copying settings, or trying new presets hoping something clicks, this course will teach you what to listen for and what to change. No expensive gear or recording experience required.
If dialing in tone still feels like guessing
Know what to listen for before you spend another dollar on gear.
Right now
✕You can hear when your tone is boomy, harsh, muddy, or washed out… but you're not sure what to change.
✕You copy someone else's settings or presets, then still spend 20 minutes tweaking.
✕Your tone sounds great by itself, then gets buried or disappears in a full mix.
After the course
✓You hear what too much and too little sound like, and find the sweet spot fast.
✓You dial in any amp, pedal, or effect by ear, even on gear you've never used before.
✓You get clear, balanced, pro-level tone that actually sits where it should in a mix.
Most of the time, your gear isn't the problem. A $5,000 rig sounds terrible if you can't dial it in, and a basic rig sounds incredible if you can.

I can now confidently say I have a solid understanding of how to get a great tone… I understand my own gear more and it gave me insights I had no idea of before (for example on dialing in your amp).

How we dial in a rig
Stop memorizing settings. Start finding the sweet spot.
From Module 2 · Amps
This is what the sweet spot sounds like.
The mic you choose matters as much as the overdrive pedal you buy. And where you put it matters just as much. Watch as we move the mic across the speaker while strumming, listening as the tone changes with every position, until we find the spot where it sounds biggest, fullest, and most balanced.
You'll do this again and again across the course: hear the extremes, recognize the sweet spot, and know exactly where to stop.
01
Move the mic
Change its position across the speaker.
02
Hear what changes
Listen to the shift in brightness, body, attack, and fullness.
03
Narrow it down
Move back toward the positions that sound biggest and most balanced.
04
Lock it in
Stop where the mic captures the fullest version of the amp.
Don't memorize the number. Learn to hear when you've arrived.

01
Module 1 · The Foundation
+
Why understanding tone on real gear gives you a clear path through endless digital options, so you know what you're aiming for before you start tweaking.
02
Module 2 · Amps
+
Gain vs. volume, bass vs. depth, mids, treble, tone, cut and reverb, all dissected one at a time. Dial in your amp so that it has maximum sustain, body, and that 'sweet spot' of breakup.
03
Module 3 · Microphones + Placement
+
Center vs. edge. Close vs. far. Dynamic vs. ribbon. Discover how even a centimeter of mic placement can reshape your tone, how to blend microphones, and how to authentically capture the sound of your amp.
04
Module 4 · Compression
+
Understand what every compressor control is doing, and how each one affects punch, sustain, dynamics, and the way your guitar responds.
05
Module 5 · Overdrive
+
Dial drive, volume, and EQ against the sound of your amp, then stack multiple overdrives into layers of gain that still respond to your hands.
06
Module 6 · Distortion
+
Get the kind of soaring lead tone that feels massive in the mix without sacrificing clarity or body.
07
Module 7 · Fuzz
+
Get that massive, explosive fuzz sound, and know exactly when to use it so it hits hard instead of taking over everything.
08
Module 8 · Delay, Reverb + Modulation
+
Build huge, spacious delay and reverb tones that surround your playing without washing out a single note.
09
Module 9 · The Digital Rig
+
Bring the entire method into your digital rig and use the same instincts to shape amps, cabs, compression, gain, delay, reverb, and modulation.
10
Module 10 · Putting It Together
+
Put all the pieces together and walk away with a repeatable system for dialing in pro-level tone anywhere.

Questions
FAQ
Do I need the same gear in The Tone Course?+
No. We demonstrate on a wide variety of specific amps, pedals and mics, both pro and budget, showing you what each piece is doing so you can apply the same thinking to whatever you own.
Is this just a bunch of settings to copy?+
No. We teach method, not specific settings. What works in our studio won't necessarily be exactly what works on your rig, which is why the goal is to show you how to find the perfect setting for yourself.
I've been playing for years. Is this still for me?+
Yes! In fact, experienced players often need this most. You can get very good at guitar without anyone ever explaining why your rig sounds harsh, muddy, thin, or completely different on stage. Playing and understanding tone are two different skills; this is the second one.
Will this help if I'm on a Helix, Fractal or another modeler?+
Yes. Everything in the course translates directly to Helix, Fractal, or any modeler. Module 9 shows you how to take the same tone principles into the digital world and get great results without endlessly tweaking.
Is this an audio-engineering course?+
No. It's taught from a guitar player's perspective, in terms you can relate to (i.e. body, brightness, boom, harshness, punch, saturation, width, feel, etc). No recording background needed.
How do I access the course?+
It gets added to your account at The Guitar Institute and you can start watching immediately.
How long do I have access? Can I watch on my phone?+
Lifetime access! You buy once and it's yours for forever. Watch from your Guitar Institute account on any device.
Is there a guarantee?+
Yes! A 10-day guarantee. Try it on your own rig; if The Tone Course isn't right for you, you're covered.
What's in the Everything Bundle?+
The 2026 Everything Bundle is this year's 19 releases, including this one, plus 365 Chord Voicing Lessons free. The Collector's Edition is the full 48-title library: everything in the 2026 Bundle plus the entire Legacy Vault — all 29 programs since 2016 — with all 16 physical books shipped to your door.
